The Final Destination franchise will be back in theaters soon enough, as a planned reboot is in the works at New Line. Ahead of the upcoming remake, let’s take a moment to revisit the original film from 2000 with these killer facts you may not know…
1It’s partially inspired by true events
The concept of the Final Destination movies is a simple one, with a formula repeated in each of the subsequent sequels. All of the films begin with someone having a vivid premonition of a deadly tragedy moments before it actually happens. The original movie’s story has a group of teens escaping from a doomed airliner just minutes before it explodes in the air, exactly as it had in a premonition.
Nowhere in the movie’s marketing does it advertise itself as being based on true events. However, as it turns out, a true story did partially inspire the plot. In a 2011 interview, writer Jeffrey Reddick revealed he came up with the concept while reading the news. “I was actually flying home to Kentucky and I read this story about a woman who was on vacation in Hawaii and her mom called her and said ‘Don’t take the flight tomorrow, I have a really bad feeling about it,'” Reddick explains. “She switched flights and the plane that she would have been on crashed. I thought, that’s creepy… what if she was supposed to die on that flight?”
While the movie may have been inspired by a true story, it wasn’t based on the real-life TWA Flight 800 tragedy in 1996, as many reviewers had purported at the time. In a later interview, Reddick shut down the misconception that the film was based on this particular incident, stressing that the story was originally written in 1994. However, footage from TWA Flight 800 crash was shown in the movie, which was likely how the rumor got started.
