Final Destination reboot
Final Destination | New Line Cinema

It has been eight years since the last installment in the Final Destination series premiered. Over the course of five films, the franchise proved to be a box office success with every release. Now, horror powerhouse New Line, aka “The House that Freddy Built,” is hoping to bring that success back with a Final Destination reboot.

Behind the scenes penning the reboot script will be Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, a writing duo who have worked on several horror films together, starting with 2005’s Feast. Their collaborative films include the Feast trilogy, Saw 4-6, Saw 3D, The Collector, The Collection, Piranha 3DD, and the upcoming  Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. While there are no details yet on the plot, characters, or cast, it is being called a re-imagining of the Final Destination franchise.

The first Final Destination film, released in 2000, was directed and co-written by James Wong and starred Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith, and Tony Todd. It was based on spec script titled “Flight 180,” which was originally written for The X-Files by Jeffrey Reddick. The story follows a high school student (Sawa) who has a premonition of a plane exploding after he boards with his senior class for a senior trip. Becoming frantic, he tries to warn everyone that the plane is going to explode, which results in him and several others leaving the flight. When the plane explodes mid-air exactly as he predicted, everyone who left the plane had unfairly cheated Death, which makes the invisible force take matters into its own hands. The group is gruesomely picked off one after another until Death is finally satisfied.

A teenager having a deadly premonition and Death collecting what is his, often with creative and gory results, is the same formula for each Final Destination film. It’ll be interesting to see if Melton and Dunstan go the same route as the first five films, or put a different spin on things. Either way, anyone who has seen their previous work know that fans are in for some fun gore and death gags.

Stay tuned for more developments!
