One upcoming horror movie on our radar that we can’t look forward to enough is Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe), the film is based on the popular children’s book trilogy of the same name. Written by Alvin Schwartz, the book regaled spooky folklore tales, each of them made that much more horrifying with some disturbing illustrations by Stephen Gammell.

Serving as a producer, Guillermo del Toro sought to adapt the early ’90s book series into a feature film. After seeming to languish in development hell for a while, the project is now making heavy traction. As of today, filming has begun on the Scary Stories movie, according to a post on Facebook from Øvredal.

“So here we go!” Øvredal exclaims, announcing that filming has officially begun on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. He even posted a picture of the slate from the set.

There’s just something so inherently amazing in seeing this film finally begin shooting. Anyone who was a kid in the ’90s read these books, with them serving for many as an introduction into the horror genre. With the involvement of talented filmmakers like Øvredal and del Toro, the anticipated movie seems to be in good hands.

Synopsis: [Zoe] Colletti will play Stella Michaels, a young girl still haunted by her mother’s disappearance on Halloween night — an incident that she suspects her father knows more about than he lets on. Years later, Stella and her friends are involved in a Halloween prank gone wrong. But are they really at fault, or was it the work of a vengeful spirit — a female ghost who uses her scary stories to come after the teens when they begin to investigate the disappearance of several children?

In addition to Zoe Colletti in the lead, other cast members include Michael Garza, Austin Abrams, Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur, and Natalie Ganzhorn. What truly made the book series to scary was its accompanying illustrations from Gammell. If the film can even come close to matching those terrifying visuals, then fans of the book series should be happy.
