NFF Review: ‘Eat Brains Love’ Is Zombie Comedy at Its Best

Since its world premiere this fall, the new zombie comedy movie Eat Brains Love has been generating a lot of buzz in the festival circuit. The film has been garnering a very positive reception and managed to win Best Picture at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival. Continuing its festival run, Eat Brains Love made a stop at the Gateway Film Center in Columbus, Ohio for the annual Nightmares Film Festival, where it was once again a hit.

Eat Brains Love is based on the novel of the same name by Jeff Hart. Rodman Flender directs using a screenplay penned by Michael Herro and David Strauss. In addition to helming horror flicks like The Unborn and Leprechaun 2, Flender is also known for directing the 1999 cult classic Idle Hands. Perhaps having Flender in the director’s chair for Eat Brains Love is very appropriate, because in many ways, the film very much seems like the Idle Hands of today. Among other similarities, both movies use horror elements and dark humor to tell a simple story of teenage romance, with very funny and oddly charming results.

In Eat Brains Love, Jake Cannavale and Angelique Rivera star as Jake and Amanda, two fairly-normal high schoolers with hardly a thing in common. That all changes when both simultaneously turn into flesh-hungry zombies as the result of premarital sex, devouring a variety of their classmates. Retaining their awareness, the undead duo turn to vigilantism to satisfy their hunger. Meanwhile, psychic government agent Cass (Sarah Yarkin) aims to track them down.

Much of the comedy in Eat Brains Love is over-the-top, as you would probably expect. Fortunately, the film fully embraces its humor and never comes across as taking itself too seriously. Honestly, you’ve got to admire its creativity as well, as there’s plenty here which sets Eat Brains Love apart from other zombie comedies of its type. There are plenty of amusing one-liners and other zingers to keep you entertained, though the heart of the story lies in the teenage romance between Jake and Amanda.

The lead characters are also incredibly likable and it becomes very easy to root for them, even though they’re zombies feasting on human flesh. As a rom-zom-com, Eat Brains Love is among the best, and as a teen horror comedy, I would also say it’s right up there with Flender’s Idle Hands. If you’re a fan of that film and other horror-themed dark comedies, you’ll have a great time with Eat Brains Love. Check it out if you get a chance!
