The Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai has found a new home ahead of its third season, as the YouTube series is officially moving to Netflix. Exactly when the switch will occur isn’t yet clear, but word from Netflix is that the first two seasons of the show will start streaming on the service sometime “this year” with Season 3 set to follow sometime after.
The show’s third season is currently in the works. According to TheWrap, all of the Season 3 episodes have been filmed, meaning we could end up getting more Cobra Kai sooner than later. Because the full details of the deal with YouTube haven’t been disclosed, however, the release plan for the new season remains unclear, and it’s also possible we might not get Season 3 until next year.
“Making Cobra Kai has been a dream come true for us since day one,” the Cobra Kai team said in a statement. “We are thankful for the tireless dedication of Jeff Frost, Chris Parnell, Jason Clodfelter, Karen Tatevosian, and all our partners at Sony for finding us a new home where we can not only continue the series, but also explore opportunities to further expand ‘The Karate Kid’ universe. We are beyond excited to join our new partners at Netflix and look forward to the show reaching the massive global audience who loves this franchise as much as we do.”
Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg write and executive produce Cobra Kai. Serving as a direct sequel series to the original Karate Kid movie trilogy, Cobra Kai moves the story ahead three decades after Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) had their iconic brawl in the finals of the karate tournament. From the points of view of both characters, the story delves into the decades-long quarrel between the two former fighters when Johnny reopens the Cobra Kai karate dojo where he had trained as a teenager.
