Released in 2016, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call did not have the warmest reception from fans upon arrival. Even before the movie hit the big screen, it had sparked some harsh criticism online from its trailer alone. After a decade, however, the film is finding a new audience thanks to its recent arrival on Netflix.
At the start of the year, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call was added to Netflix’s streaming library. Just days later, the polarizing reboot cracked Netflix’s Top 10 movies list. Per FlixPatrol, it currently sits at the No. 9 spot. This may suggest that there’s still a place for the film on streaming, even with its divisive reception 10 years ago, along with the franchise having since moved on.
Directed by Paul Feig, who co-wrote the script with Katie Dippold, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call sought to reboot the movie series with an all-new cast of characters. It featured an ensemble cast that included Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon, while cameo appearances were also included for original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson. The big-budget film fell short at the box office with a $229 million haul, and plans to make a sequel were subsequently abandoned.

The franchise later reverted to its original canon with the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2021, bringing back the OG team alongside a new cast of characters. This was followed up with 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and reportedly, there are plans for another sequel to be made. It’s currently unclear when the next film will be released, though Dan Aykroyd has hinted that the next one may not bring back the original stars from the 80s films.
“They’ve got a whole new cast and they’ve got whole new ideas,” the Ray Stantz actor told the New York Post in late 2024. “I think probably they’re going to move on to advancing it beyond the originals, which they should.”
Meanwhile, fans can check out Ghostbusters: Answer the Call on Netflix.
