Oh my Glob! Cartoon Network has announced that when Adventure Time returns for its ninth season it will also be its last.

The show, which features Jake the Dog and Finn the Human, is set in the fantastic world of Ooo, a saccharine post-apocalyptic version of Earth where the human race has been all but wiped out and in its place a society of little people made of sugar have risen to power. It is the brain child of Pendleton Ward, the chubby brains behind other cult show Bravest Warriors.

Ward brought his bizarre creation to life way back in 2010, and it was an instant hit for Cartoon Network. It captured the hearts of both adults and children alike, with its clever mix of humor that would appeal to both demographics without alienating either, and launched a wave of merchandise along the way. It also won several awards.

Speaking to Deadline, Ward said:

“Adventure Time was a passion project for the people on the crew who poured their heart into the art and stories. We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives, and make a show that was personal to us, and that had jokes too! I’m really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It’s a special thing, I think.”

Fear not though, for the official end date for the show isn’t until 2018, meaning there’s still plenty of time for specials and a mini-series or two before we have to say goodbye to our mathematical mates forever.

How should the show end? Does a show like Adventure Time need a definite ending or should the door be left open for some new adventures somewhere down the road? Let us know your thoughts and ideas in the comments section.
