Have your crucifixes and garlic at the ready guys, because Netflix’s animated adaptation of the Castlevania video games is almost here. The first teaser poster has landed, courtesy of producer Adi Shankar.
The poster highlights Count Dracula’s infamous castle, which will be more than familiar to fans of the video game franchise. As you can see, the image doesn’t give too much away, but may be indicative of the animation style.
If you’re unfamiliar with the source material, Castlevania was a series of games released in 1986. For most of the 30 years it’s existed, the game has seen players take on the role of various members of a famous clan of vampire hunters, most famously Simon Belmont, as they go toe to toe with the undead.
The characters have appeared on television in the past, and the game was almost adapted into a movie back in 2005, but it never materialised. Shit got real, however, when it was announced that a new animated series would be released on Netflix in 2017, under the watchful eye of Adi Shankar. It would also fall under the same studio as Adventure Time, which is a match made in heaven, and a bizarre crossover waiting to happen.
Shankar is also the producer of the massively underrated Dredd movie, and one of the people who have really championed a sequel. With that looking increasingly unlikely, we are more than happy to let him loose on such an iconic property.
Here’s the official blurb:
Inspired by the classic video game series, “Castlevania” is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert, and Adi Shankar.
