Marvel To Launch New Venom Event Series: ‘Venomverse’

It’s been a long time since Venom had any real credibility in the Marvel Universe, but with the recent news that Tom Hardy would star in a live action, R-rated movie, as well as Marvel’s decision to bring the character back to the forefront in the comic book world too, that is all set to change.

Venom first appeared back in May 1988, in The Amazing Spider-man #300. He was like nothing the comic book world had seen before, and quickly became one of the most popular villains of all time. When Sam Raimi took the reins of the Spider-Man movie franchise, fans were insistent on the characters’ inclusion. When he finally appeared in the God-awful Spider-Man 3 however, what we got was a toned down, sub par version of the malevolent Symbiote. Whether the Tom Hardy version will be any better remains to be seen.

Things are looking up in the comic book world though, as Marvel prepares to launch its new Venomverse saga, in which the original Venom is transported to a distant planet where he is the meal of choice for a deadly new alien species known as the Poisons. With his life on the line, Venom calls upon some familiar faces like you’ve never seen them before, to go to war.

The Venomverse story will be set in the expanded universe, and will feature Symbiote versions of all our favourite characters including Ghost Rider, Rocket Raccoon, Deadpool and Logan.

Cullen Bunn (X Men Blue) will write the five-issue series, while Iban Coello (Batman Beyond Universe) will provide the art work. Covers will be drawn by Nick Bradshaw (Wolverine and the X-Men), and variants will be handled by Clayton Crain (Spider-Gwen).

The series launches September 2017.
