EA have shown the first gameplay trailer and 13 minutes of multiplayer footage for the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront II. At the EA conference during this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), representatives for Dice Productions took to the stage to showcase some of the changes made to one of the most beloved Star Wars videogame franchises. From the footage shown (courtesy of IGN), we can assume that the class system of previous installments in the series will make a welcome return. The footage features some of these classes in action, such as assault troops, support, and heavy weapons specialists.
While no footage was shown of the campaign mode, the multiplayer looks as fun as ever. In an extremely surprising (and well received) piece of news, EA announced that all DLC and additional content for Star Wars: Battlefront II will be free. Star Wars: Battlefront II will be one of the few multiplayer games in recent memory to not offer a season pass, news I’m sure many gamers will love. Check out the Gameplay trailer below.
The gameplay also gives us a closer look at one of the new maps, Naboo, marking the first prequal planet we’ve gotten a look at so far. Arial dogfighting also makes its return, as enemy ships wage fast paced combat over the war-torn city. Star Wars: Battlefront II also sees the highly anticipated debut of fan favourite character Darth Maul. In the gameplay snippet shown, Maul looks to be just as deadly and badass as ever.
The footage also revealed that the multiplayer will not directly follow the timeline of the movies, as we see characters from all eras fighting in the same match. I personally love this choice, we finally get to see characters like Rey and Boba Fett go head to head. Other Force Awakens characters, like Finn and Captain Phasma will also be playable shortly after release.
The previous installment in the franchise, 2015’s Star Wars: Battlefront, left many fans disappointed. While the gameplay, graphics and sound design were top notch, there was something missing. Lack of content and an aggressive DLC plan rubbed some players the wrong way. With the return of the class system, access to previous eras and a full single player campaign, it may be the perfect time to return to a galaxy far, far away.
So, what do you think of the new Star Wars: Battlefront II footage? Will you be returning to the Battlefront? Or is it too little, too late? As always, let us know in the comments and on social media!
