Earlier today, Adi Shankar, producer for Netflix’s upcoming Castlevania, announced the cast of the animated adaptation. Considering how little we actually know about the show, we’re excited when any bit of information comes out. Thankfully, the casting news was far from a disappointment.
Actor Graham McTavish, known for his work on many projects including Preacher, Outlander, and The Hobbit trilogy, joined Shankar in the announcement video. Seems fitting since McTavish will be voicing Dracula himself. Starring alongside McTavish will be Richard Armitage, also known from The Hobbit films and TV’s Hannibal. Armitage will take on the role of protagonist and vampire hunter Trevor Belmont. Alejandra Reynoso, who has done extensive voice-over work for the animated show Winx Club, will be voicing Sypha Belnades, a sorceress. Battlestar Galactica’s James Callis will voice Alucard, the son of Dracula. Emily Swallow, from TV’s The Mentalist and Supernatural, will portray Lisa Tepes, wife of Dracula and mother to Alucard. Orphan Black’s Matt Frewer will voice The Bishop and Tony Amendola, who starred in Annabelle, will voice The Elder.
Castlevania is written by Warren Ellis, the co-creator of many comic books, including Transmetropolitan and Red, with the latter getting adapted into two feature films- Red and Red 2. The show is executive produced by Ellis, Kevin Kolde (Adventure Time, Bee and PuppyCat), Frederator Films‘ Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.
Shankar has confirmed that the show will be an adaptation of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Dracula’s Curse was set in 1476 and saw Dracula go on a path of destruction throughout Europe, with monsters in tow. The Belmont family, who are vampire hunters, work to stop him. The producer has also said that the show will be R-rated and completely aimed towards an adult audience.
We definitely can’t wait to check out Castlevania on July 7th. Be sure to let us know what you think about the casting news!
