British musician Ed Sheeran made a cameo in the season premiere of Game of Thrones, leading fans of the show to take to social media and share their thoughts. It’s apparent that Sheeran heard…or read…those thoughts loud and clear because the singer deleted his Twitter account for while.

The account is now back up, but his 19 million+ followers are gone, leaving less than 3100 (at the time of this article). All of his tweets from the last couple of years were gone as well, until moments ago. Strange, indeed.

In the season premiere episode, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) was riding through the forest and stopped to rest and eat with a group of soldiers. When Stark rode up, Ed Sheeran was singing actual lyrics from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series. The lyrics are:

He rode through the streets of the city, down from his hill on high
O’er the winds and the steps and the cobbles, he rode to a woman’s sigh
For she was his secret treasure, she was his shame and his bliss
And a chain and a keep are nothing, compared to a woman’s kiss
For hands of gold are always cold, but a woman’s hands are warm

While his cameo as the unnamed soldier was pretty minimal, fans found it was a bit hard to focus on anything else in the scene with such a familiar face. Episode director Jeremy Podeswa defended Sheeran’s role to Newsweek and said:

“He was appropriate for the part because he needed to sing. If people didn’t know who Ed was, they wouldn’t have thought about it twice. The hoo-ha seems to be from things that are outside of the world of the show. In the world of the show he did a lovely job, and he looks like he belongs in that world.

I think people interrogated it too much, they’re bringing so much of his [superstar] presence into the thing which is far beyond what anybody was thinking going into it. He is known to the producers of the show and some of the cast, and he’s a gigantic fan of the show. As everybody knows, the show really eschews stunt casting—it’s never, ever done that.

I was quite surprised about the reaction actually because I know he’s very well known and a successful singer but you’re in the bubble of the show—the cast are well known too, everybody is really well known…none of them can walk down the street without being followed. You don’t think about that very much in this context.”
