Batman & Robin - Mr. Freeze
Warner Bros. Pictures

There’s certainly no shortage of Batman movies these days. Not only have we seen the Caped Crusader on the big screen in recent films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, he’s set to star in his own upcoming standalone movie as well. The Dark Knight even has a cameo in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.

Additionally, Batman’s adversaries are getting their time to shine in theaters. There are no fewer than two separate Joker movies in the works, with a Harley Quinn-led flick also planned. But one particular villain who seems to have gotten lost in the mix over the years is Mr. Freeze, who isn’t set to appear in any of these upcoming DC movies.

But not everyone has forgotten about the chilly antagonist. Filmmaker Kevin Smith, also a major comic book fan, feels you can get a lot of powerful material out of Mr. Freeze, and if he were making the next Batman movie, that’s the villain he’d pick. Referencing the Emmy-winning “Heart of Ice” episode of The Animated Series, Smith admires how they “took one of the simplest, dopiest characters in Batman’s canon – he’s a man with a freeze gun – and turned him into one of the most tragic, Shakespearean level villains in all of comics.”

While we can all agree with Smith about the quality of “Heart of Ice,” some fans will be naturally leery about resurrecting Mr. Freeze on the big screen. The last time he was seen in theaters, he was performed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the heavily-panned Batman and Robin. But if you cut out the campy one-liners and choose an actor who’s a bit more subtle, there’s no reason Victor Fries shouldn’t have another go with the Caped Crusader in theaters.
