Sony’s upcoming Venom movie looks to be one of the darkest Marvel films of the modern era. Many fans were really hoping it would push the envelope, with some crossing their fingers for a hard R-rating. Now, we know the official rating of the film, and it’s not exactly what those hardcore fans had been hoping for.
Tickets for Sony’s Venom are now on sale, which has revealed the final run time and rating for the film. Running at 1 hour 52 minutes long, the movie is officially rated PG-13. Although the success of Deadpool gave hope to seeing more R-rated comic book movies, it’s now clear that Venom is not going to be among them.
As it is, this film’s storyline is unconnected to the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. Collider theorizes that the choice to go PG-13 was made to keep the possibility of a crossover open down the road. It’s certainly possible that the studio doesn’t want to go too far with this film, so the contrast isn’t so great should he ever meet Spider-Man in another film sometime in the future.
In any case, it’s clear the film is going to be dark and unlike any on-screen portrayal of Eddie Brock we’ve seen before. Its rating won’t dictate its quality, and what matters most is if the film tells a good story. The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer, with a screenplay by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg, and Kelly Marcel. Tom Hardy stars as the titular anti-hero, with the cast rounded out with Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott.
Venom will premiere in theaters on Oct. 5, 2018. Check out the official trailer below!
