Remake is usually considered by horror fans to be such a dirty word when it comes to rebooting the classics. Evil Dead seems to have broken the mold, however, as the film was generally enjoyed by fans of the genre. Despite a new story and the absence of Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams, the 2013 reboot from Fede Alvarez became a popular horror film in its own right.
In October 2016, an unrated version of the 2013 film was released on digital platforms, containing nearly five minutes of cut footage. Oddly enough, however, a proper home video release never came to fruition. Those hoping for an official Blu-ray of the unrated film would one day become available, and fortunately, that day will arrive next month.
Now available to purchase on Amazon, an all new 2-disc Blu-ray set will feature both the theatrical and unrated versions of the film. Of course, there will be some special bonuses included as well. But it goes without saying that the additional footage, adding nearly five whole minutes of extra gore, is what’s going to be most appealing here.
Check out the bonus features, according to the listing:
DISC 1: Unrated Version
DISC 2: R-Rated Version:
- Audio Commentary
- Making Life Difficult Featurette
- Directing The Dead Featurette
- Being Mia Featurette
- Unleashing the Evil Force Featurette
With Bruce Campbell retiring as Ash and Ash vs Evil Dead over as a TV series, the Evil Dead franchise currently sits in purgatory. An all new film followup to the 2013 remake seems much more likely now, especially since Alvarez is clearly on board. High sales of this Blu-ray can only help that cause. Synopsis: Mia (Jane Levy), a drug addict, is determined to kick the habit. To that end, she asks her brother, David (Shiloh Fernandez), his girlfriend, Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) and their friends Olivia (Jessica Lucas) and Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) to accompany her to their family’s remote forest cabin to help her through withdrawal. Eric finds a mysterious Book of the Dead at the cabin and reads aloud from it, awakening an ancient demon. All hell breaks loose when the malevolent entity possesses Mia.
