Joaquin Phoenix will be the next actor to take on the role of Joker in an upcoming feature film. Directed by Todd Phillips, the film is unrelated to the films in the DCEU such as Suicide Squad and Justice League. Simply titled Joker, the film will be an origin story explaining how the Clown Prince of Crime came to be.
Recently, some first look images of Phoenix as Joker were released. However, some fans were left feeling underwhelmed, as Phoenix wasn’t wearing the trademark clown makeup. Clearly, these images are of the man who becomes Joker, just before his transition into the infamous supervillain. Everyone has still been waiting to see what Phoenix looks like once he actually has the makeup on, and today, we’ve been given a very good look at him.
Over on Instagram, Phillips has released a camera test of Phoenix in character. It shows Phoenix without the makeup, with images of the facepaint edited in. By the end of the clip, a clear look at the painted-up Joker is revealed, and it may or may not have been what you were expecting. Check it out below…
This version of Joker seems to look less like other depictions we’ve seen from DC in comics and films, and more like infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy. The look isn’t what we’re used to, but we can all agree that Phoenix looks absolutely psychotic. Because this is an origin story, the character’s appearance could also potentially change over the course of the film as Joker fine-tunes his look.
Joker is set to release in theaters everywhere on Oct. 4, 2019.
