‘Tis the season for all things spooky! If you are looking for a comic series to put you in the Halloween spirit, perhaps one of these will be up your alley.
1Nailbiter
Sixteen of the worst serial killers this country has seen have come from the town of Buckaroo, Oregon. Its most recent killer resident is Edward Charles Warren, also known as ‘Nailbiter’. He earned his name due to his habit of chewing his victims’ nails and flesh off. After a FBI agent goes missing in Buckaroo, NSA agent Nicholas Finch investigates the disappearance and why the town is home to so many serial killers.
The Nailbiter comics are one of my favorite series, delivering an intriguing and in-depth story, as well as plenty of gore. If you are looking for a horror comic, this is a great place to start.
2Batman & Dracula Trilogy
Batman faces off against Dracula, but he is unable to defeat him until he becomes a vampire himself. After the ancient and legendary vampire is killed, Batman is staked by Alfred, however only temporarily, and awakens to go on a murderous rampage against his enemies. I won’t hit on any other spoilers, but it is definitely a must-read for fans of Batman and Dracula.
There are certainly other Batman stories that fall into the horror genre, but this trilogy is an absolute standout with beautiful illustrations to match the dark story. The trilogy is not considered canon in the Batman universe, which allowed writer Doug Moench to really have some fun with it.
3Marvel Zombies
Written by The Walking Dead comic co-creator Robert Kirkman, Marvel Zombies is exactly how it sounds- Marvel gets zombified. The series is set on Earth-2149, which is an alternate version of the Marvel Universe. After The Sentry crashes down, already infected with the “Hunger,” he proceedes to attack the Avengers, which makes the infection spread quickly. Unlike the usual brain-dead zombies we’re used to, the superheroes infected by the Hunger keep their superpowers and intelligence.
For fans of Evil Dead, the series even has a crossover with Ash Williams in Marvel Zombies vs. The Army of Darkness, written by John Layman.
428 Days Later
Taking place between the events in 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, the comics are a must-read for fans of the movies. The story follows Selena, one of the survivors from the 28 Days Later film, as she gets talked into re-entering infected London by an American journalist looking into the incidents that have taken place.
The 28 Days Later comics are just as heart-pounding as the films and it is a treat to see Selena’s story continued.
5Blood & Gourd
The residents of Olympia, Washington must fight to survive while battling demonic pumpkins after they come to life with murderous rage. The pumpkins have been humiliated and abused for decades by humans, and are looking to even the odds.
Packed with a whole lot of gore, beautiful artwork, and a fun storyline, the Blood & Gourd comic series are a perfect read for Halloween.
