When one hears the phrase “punk rock horror,” those who’ve seen The Ranger will immediately think of this film first. Directed by Jenn Wexler, the film focuses on a group of punks fleeing from the law by hiding out in the nearby woods. Unfortunately, things quickly get much worse for them when a violent park ranger sets his sights on the group, taking out the young hooligans one-by-one. Recognizing the film’s unique qualities, Shudder has picked up the rights to the movie, and we can expect to see it added to the service in 2019.
A throwback to the ’80s, The Ranger has a classic slasher vibe with a dash of punk, akin to a blend between The Return of the Living Dead and the Friday the 13th series. The unique title certainly stands out when compared to all of this year’s new horror films, and Shudder seems like a great avenue to stream the new film. Considering its successful festival run, it’s awesome to see the film find its way to a larger audience through the Shudder streaming service, which has been rising in popularity fast as well over this past year.
To get a feel for what to expect from The Ranger, you can watch the teaser trailer below. The short video is a work of art in itself, and it will let you know either way if this film is up your alley. Check it out and see for yourself.
Synopsis: When Chelsea and her friends get in trouble with the cops, they flee the city and go on the run. Fueled by a hallucinogenic drug called Echo, they hope to lay low-and get high-in an old family hideout in the woods. But Chelsea’s got reservations about going back to nature and secrets she’s not sharing with her friends. When a shot rings out, her past comes crashing back, and the punks find themselves pitted against the local authority- an unhinged park ranger with an ax to grind.
We hope to find out the exact release date for the film on the service soon. In the meantime, you can see what else there is to offer by heading on over to Shudder!
