Because most of us don’t count the 2010 remake, the films in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series are considered by many to end with 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason. With fifteen years having passed since the last time Robert Englund portrayed Freddy Krueger on film, all hope seems to be lost as far as ever seeing it happen again. However, the actor himself is now teasing fans about the possibility of doing one more sequel for the classic horror series.

During a recent appearance on Access Online, Englund spoke about reprising the role for a Halloween special of the comedy TV series, The Goldbergs. The actor was asked about the chances of playing Freddy in another movie, now that he’s gotten a taste of playing the character again for television. His answer is leaving many to speculate that we could see Robert as Freddy on the big screen one more time.

They’re gonna need a new actor to play Freddy because they’re gonna have to do eight of them. I might have one left in me… but yeah.”

In other words, Englund is suggesting if New Line does another A Nightmare on Elm Street, they should hire another actor if they want to do a bunch of sequels. Given his age, Englund knows he can’t stick around for a new set of eight films. However, by saying he has a film left in him, that means he’s open to playing Freddy Krueger in one more movie. All it’s going to take is for New Line to give him the opportunity (and a decent enough script, probably).

In the past, Englund has suggested he’s retired from the role forever. Perhaps the success of Halloween helped to change his mind, along with his appearance on The Goldbergs. Maybe he missed how it felt to wear that trademark sweater and fedora. For what it’s worth, we all miss seeing him in that Freddy getup as well, so let’s hope New Line makes the right call and gives us one more Elm Street film with the real Freddy Krueger!
