The Toxic Avenger is one of the most well-known indie movies of all time, brought to us originally in 1984 by Troma Entertainment. Directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, the classic film about a mutilated vigilante was an instant hit, resulting in three official sequels and an animated spin-off. Rumblings of a reboot have been in the rumor mill for years, but the project is finally making some traction as Legendary Pictures has acquired the rights with the intent of launching a new Toxic Avenger franchise.

Legendary’s Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter are overseeing the film. Troma’s Kaufman and Herz will be returning as producers. This will help the reboot maintain the spirit of the original, but it’s likely going to be very different in many ways. This is planned to be a big-budget version of the story, which will allow for lots of differences compared to the original film. Be that as it may, hopefully the finished product will wind up being something the first Toxie will approve of.

As of now, nobody is attached to write the screenplay or direct the film. With the movie now in the works, however, we’re expecting some names to be announced for the planned movie soon. While the bigger budget will certainly help the new movie stand out on its own, hopefully it will have the same twisted sense of humor of the 1984 version and its sequels. The Toxic Avenger is known for being over-the-top with its violence and dark comedy, and most fans would likely appreciate the remake to carry these same qualities.

There’s no word yet on when we can expect to see Legendary’s Toxic Avenger hit theaters. It’s going to be very hard for any potential reboot to top the original, regardless of how much money they have invested in it. Still, the idea of seeing Toxie on the big screen is certainly an intriguing one. Stay tuned for updates.
