Dying to see that new Ted Bundy movie with Hollywood heartthrob Zac Efron playing the infamous serial killer? Netflix has you covered. After having its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile has been picked up by Netflix, with the streaming giant buying the U.S. rights for about $9 million. Certainly, this is a move that makes a lot of sense for the company, as their original docuseries The Ted Bundy Tapes has proven to be a hit.

Reportedly, Netflix is planning an awards season theatrical run for the project as well. This means that it likely will be seeing a wider theatrical release before landing on the streaming service. Perhaps the powers that be are so impressed with Efron’s performance as Ted Bundy, they’re confident he’d be able to snag an Emmy for the role. In any case, the movie will be available to stream on the network sooner or later, and more updates on a potential release date should now be forthcoming.

Initially, the news of Efron’s casting as Bundy seemed like kind of a stretch for most people. The young actor is typically known for his family-friendly roles stemming from doing the High School Musical movies. However, Bundy is different from most serial killers in the sense that he was handsome and charming – just like Efron. It’s how he managed to elude capture for so long, fooling even the people in his life closer to him than anyone else. One look at Efron in character proves that the casting choice wasn’t so crazy after all, as he’s a dead ringer for the real-life murderer.

Co-starring with Efron in the film is actress Lily Collins, with the story playing out from her point of view. Also appearing in the film are Jim Parsons, Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Sodelario, John Malkovich, and Angela Sarafyan. The movie is directed by Joe Berlinger.
