Scream Slasher Film
Dimension Films

When it comes to violent horror movies, everyone in the film is a potential victim, and somebody’s gotta be the first to go. Still, our jaws were on the floor when these victims bit the dust…

1Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore, Scream)

When Scream was released in 1996, viewers went in expecting Drew Barrymore to play a main character. She had been featured heavily in the film’s promotional materials, which included a prominent spot on the official poster. It seemed like a safe bet Barrymore would be making it close to the end, if she wasn’t in fact the horror film’s final girl.

In the start of the movie, the Ghostface killer calls Barrymore’s character, Casey Becker, while she’s cooking popcorn. The anonymous caller taunts Casey about horror movies before murdering her boyfriend right in front of her. Even by this point, however, most filmgoers felt no real sense of danger for Casey, presuming she’d inevitably escape the encounter alive. Was Wes Craven really willing to kill off a big name like Drew Barrymore in the opening minutes of the movie?

As it turns out, yes he most certainly was. Despite Casey’s best efforts to flee, Ghostface captures her in the front yard, brutally stabbing the poor girl to death. Her body was then hung from a tree to be put on display, shocking both her parents in the movie and the people watching in the theater. Even after three sequels, Casey Becker could very well be the most memorable victim from the Scream franchise.
