4Kane (John Hurt, Alien)
Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien is considered by many to be one of the among the greatest movies of all time. It tells the story of a space crew confronted with an aggressive extraterrestrial species which manages to infiltrate their ship. The Xenomorphs introduced by the movie are still among the most feared creatures in horror, and the carnage all began with Executive Officer Kane.
Early into the film, Kane is attacked by a facehugger after discovering alien eggs. Things appear grim when he is taken back to the ship unconscious, but Kane seemingly recovers after the creature is detached from his face. Later, Kane is enjoying a meal with his colleagues, when it quickly becomes apparent something is wrong. After some choking and convulsing, Kane then has a baby alien burst through his chest, much to the shock of both his pals and the people watching.
In retrospect, it’s clear from the start Kane is a goner, now that we all know what facehuggers are and how they work. At the time, however, nobody had ever seen anything like what happens in Alien, and the tiny Xenomorph bursting out of Kane’s chest was one of the most shocking moments in cinema.
