The Walking Dead is getting a new companion series which will air sometime on AMC next year. According to Entertainment Weekly, the new show “will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.”
This will be the third official Walking Dead television series for AMC. In 2015, AMC launched the first spinoff known as Fear the Walking Dead. Taking place over multiple states (and countries) many miles away from the action on The Walking Dead, the show presented several new characters and storylines of its own. To help tie it to the main series, the show has since brought in Dwight (Austin Amelio) and Morgan (Lennie James). While never managing to reach the heights of its parent series, the show has found an audience of its own and remains popular after four seasons.
The original show first debuted in 2010, becoming an instant hit for the network. In the years since, the show would reach phenomenal heights, shattering multiple ratings records since its inception. Although overall viewership has fallen by millions from the show’s peak in popularity, it remains one of the highest-rated shows on television. Season 9 of the long-running zombie drama recently concluded, but The Walking Dead will be back this fall for new episodes with Season 10.
The new Walking Dead series will premiere on AMC sometime in 2020. Stay tuned for an official release date. In the meantime, you can catch new episodes of Fear the Walking Dead when it returns to television on June 2. Opinions about the new show? Let us hear about it in the comments below or on Facebook.
