Worth is an indie movie from writer, director, and star Eduardo Castrillo. In the flick, Castrillo plays Ricky, an up-and-coming Muay Thai fighter. While targeting the championship, Ricky meets paralegal Danielle (Samantha Aper) and a romance quickly blossoms. Just when things couldn’t seem more perfect, however, ensuing tragic moments will push Ricky to his limits both in and outside of the ring.
Although the sport of kickboxing makes for the backdrop of Worth, the film does not feel like a sports movie. Fight scenes are few and far between, and there isn’t much shown of Ricky’s Muay Thai training. The movie instead focuses more on the relationships Ricky has with his family members, as well as with his new girlfriend. While lighter on action than you might expect, the drama elements of the movie certainly do work well, and there is still plenty to appreciate about the film.

One shining aspect of the low-budget movie comes with the talented cast. Supplementing the leads are horror legends Tony Todd and Miguel A. Núñez Jr. in memorable supporting roles. With Todd as a detective and Núñez as a doctor, the parts were vastly different to roles played by the two in some of the horror classics we know them from. Clifton Powell and Johnny Gilligan both added a lot to the film as well, and it always felt that the actors were giving their all to the project.
It’s easy to expect an action-filled slugfest coming into Worth, given that it follows a Muay Thai fighter. That might lead to some slight disappointment for those not expecting anything less. As a drama, however, Worth is certainly worth watching. The cast does a great job of keeping Ricky’s interpersonal relationships interesting, and the story may hit you a bit harder than you’d expect.
Worth is now available to watch on Amazon Prime, and you can check out the official trailer below.
