the walking dead #191
Image Comics

I had just finished reading The Walking Dead #191: The Last Stand, and even though I was more than a little disinterested in things, let me start by saying: oh my God.

For a fairly boring issue, they really ended things off with a bang. I guess they always said nobody was safe, and you’d think I would’ve learned that just from the AMC show, but it seems that I didn’t. Throughout most of this month’s issue, I was fairly unimpressed. Rick managed to avoid a war breaking out with the Commonwealth, and Pam found herself in a cell after nearly leading her people to certain death. It’s definitely a different approach we’ve seen Rick take. I’m not a fan of it. A whole issue of a speech about how they aren’t the walking dead anymore just really doesn’t do anything for me.

Rick and Michonne exchange some words; completely ignoring what’s happened over the last two issues. You start to lose some connection to their story when the characters themselves seem to be emotionally distant from things. It’s fair to say that they had a bigger issue on their plate, but really, Dwight died, and we can’t forgive that, can we? I certainly can’t.

Though I did feel the issue was lackluster until the last two or three pages, seeing Carl get some leadership advice from his father was nice. An educational and still heartfelt exchange by the two that I feel will really come into play in a near future story. Perhaps a more promising leadership role within Alexandria or even Commonwealth for the young man?

The slow pacing and long speech are forgiven after that ending. Skybound has me more excited than I’ve ever been for the next issue. I can’t wait to see what happens to Rick. Is he actually going to be killed off? I can’t think of a way to save him from what has happened. I really didn’t think they would go through with it when he had a gun pointed directly at him.

The Walking Dead #191 was released on May 1st from Image Comics.
