Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is getting rebooted by Disney with a modern day sequel to the original film trilogy, and Josh Gad is in talks for the lead role. According to SlashFilm, Gad will play the grown-up version of Wayne Szalinski’s inventor son Nick, who was played by Robert Oliveri in the original. Following in his father’s footsteps, Nick accidentally shrinks his kids this time around. At this time, it’s unclear if Rick Moranis will be reprising the role of Wayne.
The original Honey, I Shrunk the Kid was released in 1989, starring Rick Moranis as Wayne Szalinski, a kooky inventor who creates a functional shrinking ray. Trouble (and comedy) ensue when his children accidentally shrink themselves along with two neighbor kids. In 1992, the sequel Honey, I Blew Up the Kid was released, featuring the main cast reprising their roles. Moranis played Wayne one last time for the 1997 movie, Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, which was released direct to video. A TV series adaptation followed before the franchise was laid to rest by the year 2000.
We’re big fans of Josh Gad here at Horror Geek Life, as noted in our official review of the Australian zombie movie Little Monsters. In that film, Gad plays a foul-mouthed children’s entertainer who’s only concern is for his own safety in the midst of a zombie virus outbreak at a petting zoo. Of course, Gad excels in family friendly films as well, as he’s known as the voice of the talking snowman Olaf from Frozen. He will be voicing the role once again for the sequel Frozen 2, which hits theaters this winter. It may be hard to know what to make of a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboot, but Gad in the starring role can only help the film.
There’s no word yet on when Shrunk will be released, but Disney is reportedly looking to premiere the film in theaters rather than on the Disney Plus streaming service. Stay tuned for more updates, and always be sure to eye the Cheerios on your spoon closely before taking a bite.
