It was announced today via Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment and New Line Cinema that a new Mortal Kombat film will begin filming later this month, for release in 2021. James Wan is attached to the picture as a producer with newcomer Simon McQuoid set to direct. Greg Russo, who is also writing the upcoming Resident Evil reboot, will be penning the script.

The movie was initially announced way back in 2011 and will commence pre-production in southern Australia later this month. It was also announced that this would be the largest production to ever take place in the state’s history. No castings have been announced as of now, but I’m sure that won’t be the case for much longer as filming is set to begin later this year.

The new Mortal Kombat film will have some big shoes to fill as the original live-action 1995 Mortal Kombat has gained quite the cult following, and is regarded by many as ‘the best video game adaptation of all time’. That film follows Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade, who are guided by Raiden, as they are summoned to a mysterious island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will decide the fate of the earth. Two years later in 1997, a sequel was released, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which picked up where the first film left off.

In addition to the reboot news, an animated Mortal Kombat movie is also in the pipeline, but even less is known about that for now.

Mortal Kombat is a video game franchise created by Midway in 1992 and is continued by Netherrealm Studios today. The latest installment in the franchise, Mortal Kombat 11, was released last month for Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, and the PlayStation. The game was published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
