‘Doom: Sigil’ Mod is Available Now and Free Next Week

Romero Games, Ltd./ZeniMax Media Inc.

Roughly 25 years after its release, 1993’s FPS progenitor and violence-in-media scapegoat DOOM has just received an unofficial fifth episode from series co-creator and designer John Romero. The expansion – or Megawad, as it’s better known among seasoned Doomers – adds another 9 levels to the classic shooter, as well as a soundtrack by Buckethead. Yes, the Buckethead! (’90s fans rejoice!)

While it is available TODAY for the low price of €6.66 (Hell joke!), the added levels will be released for free on May 31 with the added caveat of no Buckethead MP3 tracks in the levels.

Original DOOM fans have been eagerly awaiting this release since it was announced last December on DOOM’s 25th Anniversary, especially after some delays due to manufacturing issues with the premium “fan box” editions. While the was originally slated for a February release, Romero has stated on the official page, “The free megawad will be made available one week after fan boxes begin shipping so paying customers can play the SIGIL Megawad first.”

Fans were offered a chance to pre-order “Standard” and “Beast Box” editions of the Megawad’s fan box for two weeks after December’s announcement. Said boxes include such physical goodies as a 1 1/4″ floppy-themed USB Drive, a 2-Disc collection including “behind-the-scenes information on the original game and the megawad’s development,” as well as a pewter figure of John Romero’s head on a pike, in the $166 Beast Box.

If the expansion is anything like Romero’s last DOOM release, “Tech Gone Bad,” – a replacement for what has come to be known as the lackluster finale of DOOM’s shareware episode, created by then-time-crunched id Software newcomer Sandy Petersen – players can expect 9 levels of punishment and brutal challenge that have become synonymous with Romero’s design style over the years.

Please Note: SIGIL requires a copy of the original DOOM to run.
