Django could soon enough be heading back to the big screen, as Quentin Tarantino is looking to turn the comic book crossover Django/Zorro into a full-fledged theatrical movie. The legendary filmmaker has brought in Jerrod Carmichael to work on a screenplay based on the comic series. From Dynamite Entertainment, Django/Zorro is written by Tarantino and serves as a sequel to Django Unchained. It’s not clear if Tarantino is working on the film’s screenplay with Carmichael or merely overseeing the project as a consultant.
Taking place years after the events of the film, Django/Zorro follows Django working as a bounty hunter in the Western states. He stations his wife in Chicago to keep her safe, sending her money after every successful job. Through his travels, he meets the legendary Diego de la Vega, better known as the sword-wielding Zorro. Finding that they have a lot in common, Django becomes Zorro’s “bodyguard” of sorts, helping him on a new mission to free indigenous people from slavery.
While most (if not all) of Tarantino’s films seem to be set in the same universe, Tarantino has never seemed to be very interested in making sequels. If the Django/Zorro movie comes to fruition, this will be a rare theatrical sequel to a Tarantino movie, with only Kill Bill parts 1 and 2 having that distinction. Considering his close involvement, we can only hope it reaches the same level of quality of the first film. It would also seem likely star Jamie Foxx will be returning to reprise the role as well, but that isn’t yet confirmed.
Tarantino has previously suggested he plans to retire as a director after his tenth movie. With his ninth film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hitting theaters this year, that leaves potentially just one movie left for Tarantino to helm if he sticks to that statement. It doesn’t seem likely he’ll bow out with a crossover flick as his final film, so chances are slim Tarantino will be directing the movie himself.
