DC Universe’s ‘Swamp Thing’ Has Reportedly Been Cancelled

Swamp Thing Review
DC Universe / Warner Bros Television Distribution

As a long-time Swamp Thing fan, I was ecstatic over the pilot that aired exclusively on DC Universe on May 31st. The show felt fresh and original, despite featuring well-known characters. It also did not shy away from some of the most awesomely grotesque body horror we have seen in a TV series. However, while still riding that high and eagerly awaiting the remainder of season one, news of the show’s cancellation has been reported.

According to Bloody Disgusting:

There were reports of an early shut down prior to the filming of the season finale and it appears the show lost support from executives before it even aired. The DC Universe streaming service isn’t even a year old, but execs are already nervous about subscribers and reach.

After such a successful first episode, this news is, quite frankly, a bit infuriating. However, at the same time, it is also not that shocking considering there have been reports of filming issues since before the show even premiered. And, of course, it seems that all good things must come to a sudden and abrupt end these days.

The show stars Derek Mears (Friday the 13th, 2009) as the creature, Andy Bean ( It: Chapter Two) as Alec Holland, Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane (Gotham), Virginia Madsen, Henderson Wade, Maria Sten, Jeryl Prescott, and Will Patton.

Swamp Thing follows Abby Arcane, a doctor with the CDC who returns to her hometown of Houma, Louisiana to investigate a mysterious swamp virus. She soon meets scientist Alec Holland, who is also investigating the virus, which creates a quick and powerful mutation of organic swamp matter. After things go horribly wrong for Holland in the swamp, he is thought to be dead, but instead emerges as the creature.
