Mr. Resetti from ‘Animal Crossing’ Has Been Laid Off

While E3 2019 brought about lots of great announcements for gamers of all consoles, some rather sad news has come out of the event as well. Speaking with Mashable during the festivities, Animal Crossing: New Horizons project lead Aya Kyogoku officially confirmed franchise character Mr. Resetti has lost his job at the Reset Surveillance Center. Because the upcoming Animal Crossing title is the first to offer an auto-save function for players, there was no need for Mr. Resetti to serve the same purpose as he always had before, putting the temperamental mole in the unemployment line.

“I think this will be a positive thing for the player, because in New Horizons you can stop playing in the middle of your game and it’ll still save,” Kyogoku said in the interview. “But unfortunately because there’s no necessity to reset the game or reset button on the Switch, Mr. Resetti had a hard time. He was laid off from his position.”

However, this doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of Mr. Resetti. Kyogoku also teased that the character still might return in some capacity, but with an entirely separate purpose. “We also believe that Mr. Resetti is looking for a new job after his layoff. So please look forward to that,” the developer added. It remains to be seen if a new line of work will finally mellow the poor guy out.

For those who’ve never played Animal Crossing, Mr. Resetti has been featured in each title since the very first game came out in 2001. He would always appear when players turned off the game without saving their progress, losing all of the work they had put in after their last save. By verbally berating the player for an excessively long time, the goal was for Animal Crossing players to always remember to save before quitting, lest they get chewed out by Mr. Resetti the next time they played the game.

Good luck, Mr. Resetti.
