According to original director Danny Boyle, 28 Days Later is getting a third installment in the zombie movie series. While promoting his newest movie, Yesterday, Boyle confirmed with The Independent that he is teaming up with original screenwriter Alex Garland to develop the third movie.
This will actually be their first reunion since the original film from 2002, as the pair weren’t creatively involved with the 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later.
No other information about the third movie has been offered. There’s no word on who might star in the film or when it might occur. However, looking back at past comments Boyle and Garland have made could give us an idea.
In 2015, Garland hinted that the next installment would stick with the same “28 (blank) Later” gimmick if the sequel were to happen. “It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years. 28 months gives you one more place to go,” the writer said to IGN, suggesting that the next movie will be set roughly two years and a few months after the outbreak.
So, will the third movie be called 28 Months Later? That certainly looks pretty likely at this point. Still, Boyle and Garland may be now instead envisioning the aftermath of an outbreak nearly three decades later. 28 Years Later sounds like an interesting concept, especially if the virus has since decimated the planet, leaving survivors few and far between.
28 Months Later certainly sounds more doable (and probable), but if the third movie turns out to be a big hit, the chances of a fourth installment coming later are higher.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for any and all updates on the next 28 Days Later movie. Hopefully, Boyle will be able to provide some new insight soon.
