‘The Walking Dead’ Movie Is Bringing Rick Grimes to Theaters

The Walking Dead is soon set to transition from the small screen to the big screen, as the upcoming movies based on the TV series will be getting wide theatrical releases. From AMC and Universal Pictures, the first teaser trailer for the Walking Dead movies has arrived, confirming the project will be a theatrical release (as opposed to a made-for-TV movie). A release date has not yet been revealed, nor has the official title, but there’s still enough here to get the interest of fans of the franchise.

While no actual footage is shown in the teaser, a message does clearly state it will feature the return of Rick Grimes. Previously, it had been reported the character’s story would continue in a trilogy of movies, although it was unclear if these would come in the form of a TV mini-series. More than likely, Rick’s journey will officially come to an end by the close of the final movie, so hopefully the show will send him off proud.

Played by Andrew Lincoln, Rick Grimes had long been perhaps the main character of the series since its inception. The story begins with the police officer waking from a coma after surviving a gunshot wound, only to discover he now lives in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. After many years, the character was finally written out of the TV series due to Lincoln’s desire to move on, although Rick’s life was spared to allow for his story to continue in these upcoming films.

Just recently, creator Robert Kirkman ended the comic book series the TV show is based on. Because the events of what happens in the source material are drastically different from what’s played out on the TV series, it means it’s now impossible for both mediums to end the same way. The Rick Grimes movies will be forced to venture into all-new territory for the zombie franchise, making the films far less predictable.

Stay tuned for more updates.
