Released in 1994, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare can be a bit divisive with Nightmare on Elm Street fans, as the movie steps away from the usual Freddy formula and instead took a very meta approach. In the film, Robert Englund plays himself, an actor who portrays Freddy Krueger in the movies, while original NOES final girl, Heather Langenkamp, plays herself as well. A much more sinister Freddy (who lacks the killer’s trademark puns and wit) begins to actually come to life in the “real world,” and targets Langenkamp and her family. Although the film has positive reviews from the critics, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare didn’t do so hot in the box office.
Over the years, however, the film has found more love from horror fans, and even Freddy himself spoke about how highly he regards it. While Horror Geek Life covered Colorado Springs Comic Con 2019 this past weekend, Englund spent 45 minutes answering questions from fans, and touched on his favorite performance as the Springwood Slasher. He told the audience, “I think 7 is the best…” and went on to say that the film has “so much of Wes’s heart in it.”

Considering Wes Craven’s New Nightmare is the seventh installment in one of the biggest horror franchises ever, taking a risk and giving us something completely different than what we had seen before is something many fans, including this writer, still applaud Craven for doing. It is refreshing to see the star of the franchise mention it in such a loving way.
Also during the panel, Englund said that the first film, released in 1984, “is the scariest” and acknowledges that 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors “is the fan favorite.” He also admits that A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) “doesn’t necessarily have my favorite Freddy moments.”
