“Rod Serling was always ahead of his time.” This is something my dad would say time and time again over the years, and although I was not able to fully appreciate the meaning behind it, as an adult (and major Twilight Zone fan) I see how true that statement is. Serling took on topics that most at that time would not go near, including a variety of social issues, religion, and war. In other words, not only was he ahead of his time, but Rod Serling was a genuine bad ass. Now, a biopic is in the works that will explore his life a bit more.

Richard Kelly, director of the 2001 cult classic hit Donnie Darko starring Jake Gyllenhaal, is writing and directing the project, reports Geeks WorldWide. While there is not much information available as of right now, we know that Jason Michael Berman (Producer: Little Evil, The Last Days of American Crime) is set to produce via Mandalay Pictures.

This is not the first time Kelly has been connected to The Twilight Zone universe. Previously, in 2006, he wrote and directed The Box, which is a film adaptation of a short story by Richard Matheson titled “Button, Button.” Matheson wrote several screenplays for The Twilight Zone, and this same short story was adapted for The Twilight Zone revival show in the 1980s.

It would certainly seem that Richard Kelly is a fan of Rod Serling’s work, and we were excited to learn that a biopic is in the works. Hopefully we hear more news soon, including a release date!
