If you missed Lars Klevberg’s Child’s Play remake when it premiered in theaters this year — or if you caught it and want to see it again — the film is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Prior to its release, the film had gotten some flak from big fans of the original movies, as there was concern a remake could never do the series justice. However, because many of those same people now agree the project turned out better than expected, the new Child’s Play has carved its own place in the horror world.
I have referred to Child’s Play as the perfect horror movie remake, and probably the best example of doing one right. The film manages to find that balance between serving as an excellent homage to the original while offering its own unique story. The reasons the Chucky doll kills between both versions are drastically different, and yet I feel the movies are able to complement each other very well. There’s no reason the two movies can’t be enjoyed separately.
Thoughts on the other films aside, there’s plenty to appreciate about the new Child’s Play. The casting is fantastic, as Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman, and Brian Tyree Henry all shine in their starring roles. Of course, Mark Hamill does a killer job as the voice of Chucky, and even managed to make me feel sorry for the murderous robot at times. The film also invents plenty of creative new kills rather than retreading the same territory as the original, utilizing the technological aspects of this robotic version of Chucky.
Undeniably, the Blu-ray transfer looks great. The release also includes some excellent special features, including Child’s Play claymations from Lee Harcastle and some behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the film. I was most impressed to see that an audio commentary with director Lars Klevberg was also a part of the release, because this offers an even better way to explore how the movie came to be. I like the simplistic box art the film comes in as well, and I think it will look great in any big horror fan’s collection.
