Without a doubt, one of the most memorable Nintendo 64 games of them all was Rare’s GoldenEye. Based on the James Bond film of the same name, the game was notable for both its amazing single player campaign and addictive multiplayer mode. While the game was later rebooted for the Nintendo Wii and DS consoles in 2010 as GoldenEye 007, nothing can ever beat the original experience of playing the classic title during the heyday of the Nintendo 64.
Paying homage to the legendary N64 game is an upcoming fan remake, dubbed GoldenEye 25. The title comes from the developers’ plans to release the game by August 2022, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the original’s release. It’s also noted that GoldenEye 25 will consist of all assets created from scratch, meaning music and graphics won’t be lifted from the N64 version. It will otherwise be a straight remake of the classic game, featuring the same level layouts and characters but with updated graphics and an overall visual enhancement.
The GoldenEye 25 developer has already recreated the Silo mission from the original game, and a playthrough video of the level has since been released online. To get an idea of what to expect from the fan remake, you can watch the video in full below.
GoldenEye 25 will be completely free to play upon its release. The team behind the game has also made it clear they will not be accepting any financial support for the project, which will hopefully minimize the risk of a cease & desist order. Because of potential legal issues, a release on consoles is highly unlikely, and the plan is for GoldenEye 25 to be released as a PC-only game (Mac and Linux versions are also possible).
