Hocus Pocus seems to be one of those classic Halloween-set spooky movies that only gets more popular every year. Like clockwork, multiple showings of the cult classic Disney flick can be seen on television every October, and although it’s obviously much tamer than any Halloween movie with Michael Myers, many horror fans seem to appreciate it just as much. With the rumor mill churning out speculation about a sequel for several years, the idea of Hocus Pocus 2 seemed very possible, and according to a new report from Collider, it’s finally becoming a reality.
Per the report, Workaholics co-producer and writer Jen D’Angelo has been hired by Disney to pen the screenplay for Hocus Pocus 2. The project will reportedly head to the small screen for the House of Mouse’s Disney+ streaming service, which officially launches next month. With the project very early in development, there’s no tentative release date for the planned sequel, but if the screenplay turns out well and Disney fast-tracks production, we very well may see it hitting Disney+ in the Halloween season of 2020.
The plan right now is for Hocus Pocus 2 to be a direct sequel and not a remake. D’Angelo’s goal is to write a new story which will bring back all three Sanderson Sisters – Bette Midler as Winifred, Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah, and Kathy Najimy as Mary. Because pre-production has just begun, none of the three have yet officially signed on, though Disney is reportedly hopeful all three will be on board to return. Certainly, bringing back the original cast would go a long way towards pleasing fans of the first Hocus Pocus.
