As we dive into this review for Go Back, let us take a moment to acknowledge how incredibly terrifying mannequins can be. It is high time for the creepy clown revolution to give way for these nightmarish figures, and this short horror film is an appropriate launch pad for their takeover. Go Back recently screened at FEARnyc Horror Film Festival, which kicked off October 24 and goes until October 31.

Set in 1978, Scott (played by co-director and writer Nathaniel Barber) is driving down a remote country road when he comes across what seems to be a random mannequin in the road. However, as he continues driving, Scott discovers that he should have listened to his instincts, and the voice in the wind, which all told him to go back.

With a run-time of around six minutes, it is downright impressive to feel so much uneasiness. This is a character-driven short film that would work perfectly as a segment on Shudder’s Creepshow TV series. Not only does Go Back deliver the scares, but it carries the message that we need to listen to our own intuition and heed warning signs. And, of course, to never trust random mannequins on a deserted road.

The filmmakers, Matthew and Nathaniel Barber (The Barber Brothers), stated that the film “was greatly influenced by the works of John Carpenter and Sam Raimi,” as well as Starsky & Hutch. Those influences are felt throughout, with the ’70s setting and camera work feeling very natural, as opposed to having it beat over the viewers’ heads.

Overall, the short film is a hauntingly stylish campfire-esque story that will be on your mind long after you watch. Goosebumps are guaranteed.
