Thanks in large part to a record-breaking first season, AMC’s Shudder has announced today that they have officially renewed its Creepshow series for a second season. The renewal had been heavily expected given the series numbers, but horror hounds can rest easy now knowing that season 2 of the anthology series is a lock.
Based on the original film series created by the late George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead) and Stephen King, it was recently revealed that Creepshow has posted some very impressive numbers during its inaugural season on the streaming service. Premiering on September 26th, the show has been responsible for a big jump in new subscribers to Shudder. As of last week, the show has been largely responsible for 21 of the 25 biggest subscriber acquisition days. The show also pulled in record streaming numbers, with over half of all members having watched at least one episode of the show. It also posted more minutes streamed for the premiere episode’s first weekend than the next three Shudder titles combined. The series also has topped itself every week as far as total minutes streamed during each episode’s first week.
Helmed by series veteran Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), the show has been a huge hit with fans and critics alike. “For me, Creepshow has been a true labor of love,” remarked Nicotero. “To be able to pay tribute to George A. Romero’s visionary project and have the show so embraced by fans everywhere is humbling to this horror kid from Pittsburgh. I couldn’t be more pleased and look forward to continuing the series with more ghoulish delight.” In addition to Nicotero, the first season saw the return to the franchise by series vets John Harrison, Stephen King, Tom Savini, and Adrienne Barbeau.
“Creepshow has met every expectation we had for Shudder’s first original scripted series and then some, with record numbers across the board,” said Shudder GM Craig Engler. “Greg Nicotero and his team delivered an amazing show that’s unlike anything else on TV and we’re thrilled and delighted to bring it back for another season.” Nicotero’s effects studio KNB EFX Group will return for season 2.
The six-episode first season concludes tomorrow night, fittingly enough on Halloween. The episode will feature an adaptation of Joe Hill’s “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain”, directed by Tom Savini, as well as “Skincrawlers,” directed by Roxanne Benjamin.
