Paramount Pictures has released the first official trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run ahead of its May 2020 premiere, and none other than John Wick star Keanu Reeves shows up in a very entertaining cameo appearance. Directed by Tim Hill, the third theatrical SpongeBob movie will follow SpongeBob and Patrick venturing to The Lost City of Atlantic City to save Gary when the mollusk is apparently snail-napped. Of course, they learn the true power of friendship along the way on the all-CGI adventure.
During the trailer, SpongeBob and Patrick come across a tumbleweed with the actual face of Reeves shown resting inside. When they awaken him, Reeves says to call him Sage, noting, “I’m made out of sage and I am a sage, so it works out pretty well.” In response, Patrick claims his name means “toaster” in Celtic, to which Reeves quickly replies, “I’m pretty sure it doesn’t.” The moment is brief, but it’s certainly fun, and hopefully it will last a bit longer in the actual film.
In addition to Reeves, all of the starring voice cast from the franchise will be reprising their roles for this new film. This includes Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), and Rodger Bumpass (Squidward Tentacles). Awkwafina, Reggie Watts, and Snoop Dogg will also be featured as a part of the voice cast in undisclosed roles.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will be released in theaters on May 22, 2020. You can watch the full trailer, complete with the special cameo appearance from Keanu Reeves, in the YouTube video below, courtesy of Paramount Pictures on YouTube.
