The first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife has arrived, bringing about collective excitement from fans of the franchise across the world. Set for a June 2020 release, the upcoming sequel from director Jason Reitman is still over half a year away, but the new trailer gives us a pretty good look at what to expect from the anticipated movie. Ghostbusters: Afterlife will follow a new family moving to a small Oklahoma town after inheriting the property from a relative. They soon discover their connection to the Ghostbusters and embark on an all-new spectre-hunting adventure of their own. Leading the cast is Carrie Coon as the mother of the family, with Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard playing her daughter and son. Paul Rudd also appears in the movie as a high school teacher obsessed with the Ghostbusters team from Manhattan.s Some of the original stars, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts, also all reprise their roles from the original Ghostbusters movies for the new sequel.
Aykroyd and original director Ivan Reitman had literally been trying for decades to make a third movie which would continue the story established by Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. For one reason or another, the project spent many years spinning its wheels with multiple possible concepts, but the team just weren’t able to get Ghostbusters III off the ground. In 2009, Ghostbusters: The Video Game was released, which featured all of the four lead actors from the movies lending their voices and likenesses to the game. While not a movie, the acclaimed game felt like a true sequel in many ways for fans of the franchise.
Let’s hope Afterlife can prove to be a worthy successor to the Ghostbusters movies. The tone appears be a bit different, but it’s clear that the sequel will still be acknowledging the originals in a big, big way. In any case, the film is already one of next year’s most-anticipated releases, and given its connections to Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, it’s obviously a must-see movie for any longtime fan of the franchise.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 10, 2020.
