A new Firestarter movie is in the works from Universal Pictures, Blumhouse, and Weed Road, and the project has found its director. According to a new report from Collider, The Vigil helmer Keith Thomas has been brought on board to direct the film. Halloween Kills co-writer Scott Teems is writing the project, and Jason Blum of Blunhouse will produce alongside Akiva Goldsman of Weed Road. Original Firestarter associate producer Martha De Laurentiis is this time executive producing.
The original Firestarter movie famously starred a young Drew Barrymore in one of her first roles as a child actress. Martin Sheen, Art Carney, Louise Fletcher, George C. Scott, Heather Locklear, and David Keith also starred. For the remake, no names have been officially cast, though producers are reportedly looking for a big name to play the lead character’s father. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star Julia Butters is also rumored to be in the running for the new version of Barrymore’s role.
Based on a Stephen King novel, Firestarter tells the story of a young girl who carries the extraordinary ability to set fires using only her mind, due to experimental testing that had been done with her parents. The child and her father then become the targets of a secret government agency called The Shop who plot to kidnap the pair for the sake of carrying out more experiments on their bodies to learn about their abilities.
