Elijah Wood still has hopes of developing the next take on A Nightmare on Elm Street with producing partner Daniel Noah, and if it’s up to him, the potential film would bring back Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger one last time. Back in October, Wood said one of his dream horror projects to produce would be the next installment of A Nightmare on Elm Street, revealing they had been in touch with the rights-holders many times but had yet to strike a deal.
Now, speaking with ComingSoon.net, Wood has provided an update on the project, expanding upon the creative direction he would take the series along with Noah. From his view, bringing back Englund is essential for the next movie, even if the franchise will then move on in the future without him. Also, don’t expect to see a new version of Freddy’s origin explored in Wood’s potential reboot, as he feels that story has been told too many times already.
From the article:
“You have to bring Robert Englund back for one more film… I think, especially if you’re going to open up a new franchise and take it in different directions, you have to establish it with him and then you can move on. I don’t think it’s interesting to tell the same story over and over again, we don’t need another origin story of Freddy Krueger, I don’t think it should even really be so much about Freddy.”
Englund has teased that he has one more Elm Street movie left in him, but wouldn’t be able to commit to an all-new series of films. This coincides with Wood’s vision for the series, and as the fans of the franchise would certainly love to see Englund back as Freddy as well, it would appear that going with Wood and Noah could be a great direction to take the franchise next. With the Wes Craven estate currently accepting pitches for the next film, there’s a good chance this may actually happen for real, so let’s keep our razor-clawed fingers crossed.
