‘Planet of the Apes’ is Getting Rebooted… Again

Rise of the Planet of the Apes | 20th Century

It seems planet Earth will be conquered by primates in no less than four separate Planet of the Apes movie timelines, as the next planned installment of the franchise will reportedly reboot the film series once again. According to Discussing Film, the film will be another “reboot” with no connection to any of the previous Planet of the Apes films. Wes Ball is attached to the project to write and direct with David Starke and Joe Hartwick Jr on board to produce.

As it was just 2017 when we saw the latest installment of the series, it feels a bit… soon to put yet another Planet of the Apes reboot on the fast track. The franchise first launched all the way back in 1968 with the original film from director Franklin J. Schaffner. In subsequent years, the film would be followed up with the sequels Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973). Adaptations of both a live-action television series and an animated series would also follow the release of the fifth film.

In 2001, director Tim Burton would relaunch the franchise with a Planet of the Apes movie reboot, starring Mark Wahlberg in the lead role. Ten years later, the series was rebooted again with James Franco starring in Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. A new franchise was born, and the film would get the sequels Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014 and War for the Planet of the Apes in 2017. With all of this written out and with the words “planet of the apes” in the titles of so many movies already, do we really need another reboot?

The next Planet of the Apes reboot is reportedly set to begin filming this year for a possible 2022 release date. For now, you can pay a quick revisit to the original by watching a clip from the 1968 film below.
