Pinhead will soon be headed to the small screen, as HBO is moving forward with a television series adaptation of the classic Clive Barker horror film Hellraiser. According to Deadline, Halloween (2018) director David Gordon Green is also on board to direct the first several episodes of the series. It’s an interesting choice, as Green will be moving from rebooting one popular horror franchise to another, but with a different medium this time.
Also attached to the project to write the Hellraiser series are Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Gallactica) and Michael Dougherty (Godzilla: King of the Monsters). They will also be executive producing alongside Dan Farah of Farah Films, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Eric Gardner of Panacea Entertainment, and Lawrence Kuppin & David Salzman. Green and his partners at Rough House Pictures – Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and Brandon James – are all serving as exec producers as well.
Based on the film franchise, the concept behind the reboot series is to “create an elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology.” It’s reported that the series will not be a “remake,” but will instead acknowledge the mythology of Pinhead established by the movie series. Pinhead will also remain as the central focus of the Hellraiser show, which will of course lead to the biggest question all of us have right now: Will Doug Bradley return to reprise the role? While that information is not yet available, any longtime horror fan would certainly love to see that.
This series will also have no relation to a separate Hellraiser film from Spyglass that’s also in development. Perhaps that film will serve more as a “remake” of the original Hellraiser, while the HBO series will serve to expand upon the story of the original movies. If you’re feeling a sense of deja vu right now, that’s probably because the Child’s Play franchise just went through something very similar, as Syfy’s upcoming Chucky series continues the storyline from the original films while ignoring the 2019 movie remake from Orion Pictures.
No other information on the series is yet available. Stay tuned for more updates!
