It’s been about three years since we’ve last seen Kane Hodder literally ripping people apart in character as Victor Crowley, and writer/director Adam Green is again teasing the upcoming return of the brutal slasher. After three Hatchet movies and 2017’s Victor Crowley, Green hasn’t revealed much about a potential Hatchet 5, though he has previously said that he has ideas for the next couple of films. Speaking with Horror Channel about the current status of the franchise, Green makes it clear he still has Hatchet 5 in his mind, but seems to be waiting for the right time to begin work on the project.
“Given the success of Victor Crowley, it’s a safe bet that we’ll be seeing the Bayou Butcher paint the screen red again,” Green said on the show. “One of the aspects of the original trilogy that I am most proud of is that the films fit together as one cohesive story, always starting on the very frame that the previous entry ended on. So just like how I had the original trilogy plotted out before we ever shot a frame of the first film, I had several films plotted out before I started shooting Victor Crowley as well.”
Green goes on to explain that part of the success of the Hatchet series relies upon using the same key players with each installment of the franchise. The filmmaker also notes that it’s not his style to rush out sequels as if “they are being mass produced on a conveyor belt,” only putting in the work for each movie when everyone involved is in truly ready to go back to the series. “The secret to how we’ve been able to fall back in love with Victor Crowley all over again each time is that we’ve always put a few years of working on other projects in between making Hatchet sequels,” Green says.
Hatchet 5 would also take Crowley “out of the swamp,” but Green is staying mum on revealing any additional plot details. We’ll have to stay tuned for future updates on the progress of Hatchet 5.
