A re-release of the original cult classic horror game, Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition is currently selling for just $1.49 on the Nintendo eShop. For Nintendo Switch owners who either remember playing the controversial game or are curious to try it, here’s the perfect chance to do so as that price is an absolute steal. Down from its regular price of $14.99, it’s not clear how long the sale will be live, so you might want to grab it pretty quickly from the eShop.
Originally released for the Sega CD in 1992, Night Trap uses full motion video (FMV) to present what is basically an interactive slasher movie. Players assume the role of an agent watching over a teenage sleepover by way of surveillance cameras placed all throughout the house, utilizing booby traps to prevent home invaders from harming the young girls inside. The late Dana Plato is featured in a lead role in the FMV sequences, and the videos really capture the tone of the kinds of horror films that were around at that time.
What’s funny and ironic about a re-release of the game now selling on the Nintendo Switch is that it contradicts comments made by Nintendo of America President Howard Lincoln in 1993. This is because, when the game was released, its “violent content” created so much controversy that it was pulled from store shelves and even led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB). Because the controversy also resulted in congressional hearings on video game violence, Lincoln actually said in court that “Night Trap will never appear on a Nintendo system.” Maybe it’s taken nearly three decades, but you can now prove Lincoln wrong this very minute by paying less than two bucks.
You can read more about the game and purchase the digital version for cheap now by visiting the Nintendo eShop, and you can watch the official trailer for Night Trap – 25th Anniversary Edition below.
