Evil Dead 4 has found its director, as Lee Cronin has been named by Bruce Campbell as the next filmmaker to write and direct an Evil Dead movie. Speaking about the potential sequel in a recent interview with Empire, Campbell was directly asked for an update on the next Evil Dead project. In response, Campbell says that Cronin will take the reins of the series at this point with Sam Raimi personally picking the director after enjoying his previous work.
“We’re just getting off the phone with Lee Cronin, who is writing and directing the next Evil Dead,” Campbell revealed to Empire. “It’s called Evil Dead Now. Sam handpicked Lee – he did a cool movie called The Hole In The Ground. We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.”
Of course, as Campbell has previously announced his retirement from playing Ash Williams in any more live-action projects, the groovy one also confirms Ash won’t be a part of Evil Dead Now.
“From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating,” Campbell says of upcoming Evil Dead projects. He adds, “We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
As for Ash, fans of Ash vs. Evil Dead have a renewed hope in seeing a revival some day based on recent comments from Campbell’s former co-stars Dana DeLorenzo and Ray Santiago. “I feel like Ray and I could convince him [to come back],” DeLorenzo said of potentially talking Campbell out of retirement. It might be a long shot, but the desire to see it happen is a testament to just how much horror fans love Ash.
